Cultivate Innovation and Economic Diversity

Our economy is characterized by small businesses. We need to find ways to encourage and support those wishing to build and expand local businesses. How?

One, we can work to create a climate that nurtures entrepreneurs. Stevens County Extension is an active participant in the WSU Statewide Entrepreneurship Program, a project aimed at helping rural communities build support for creation of new businesses. Our eight-week course "Building Sustainable Rural Businesses" covers the main issues in starting new businesses.

Two, we need to seek ways to increase economic diversity. We are part of the WSU Rural Telework Project that recently received funding from the US Department of Commerce EDA program. Our participation in this program resulted in the creation of the Washington Dental Service office in Colville which now employees about 40 individuals with plans for expansion. The success of this company has paved the way for CSG Openline, also in Colville, which employes 60 persons and provides services to technology companies.

Third, we need to plug the leaks in our local economy. Money flows out of the community through taxes and returns through grants, social security, and university, state and federal offices. The Stevens County Extension office is currently managing almost $300,000 in grant projects and brings in an additional $227,000 in state and federal funds. Dollars flow out when local citizens buy outside the community. Buying and hiring locally helps to reduce this flow. Our direct marketing program for agricultural products is aimed at keeping more dollars at home.

Fourth, we need to use telecommunications to increase productivity. The Stevens County Extension office is leading a statewide effort in developing a rural e-commerce extension initiative for local businesses. This program will help local business make decisions regarding web site design, hosting, marketing the web site and conducting business on the Internet.
