It's Okay to be Overweight?

Recent newspaper hype regarding a recent study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that it is okay to be overweight after all.

The bad news: There is no question that obesity increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, osteoarthritis of the knees and hips, some cancers and that it can shorten lives.

Normal weight, however, is difficult to determine. For the purposes of the above study the BMI index was used. According to this index, anyone 5'8" tall is overweight between 165 and 196 pounds and is obeise at weights of 197 and over. Normal for this height is between 122 and 164 lbs.

USDA has a very informative web page on healthy eating, nutrition, and obesity prevention at www.nutrition.gov
