Xeriscaping

Xeriscaping is the art of creating an attractive landscape that needs much less water than a typical yard. The concept was developed in Colorado, one of the drier states.

A good basic primer from the University of Nebraska:
"Conserving Water in the Landscape"

Tonie Fizgerald, WSU Extension Faculty in Spokane County has done considerable work on landscaping with native plants, another means to reduce lawn size and reduce water requirements.
